𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 is curated to allow the visually impaired the precious experience of being on a joy ride on a breezy morning. It is a one-of-a-kind experience of being the arms, legs and eyes of another individual.
The day started with the riders gathering at the main entrance of Queensbay Mall at dawn. A general briefing of the route, things to take note of were disseminated to the riders to ensure everyone’s safety is prioritised.
As the riders put on their gears, the event kickstarted with the speech by Penang’s Chief Minister, YB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, the General Manager of St. Nicholas Home, Ms. Carmen Chew, and the ESG Manager of Aemulus, Hazel Wong. A warm up session with the latest pop music reverberated across the open space field, the neon pink sea of participants can be seen grooving and replicating the moves led by the three onstage dancers.
As the hype-up session ended, it was the flag-off time for the riders! With the determination coupled with a slight feeling of nervousness, the riders took off. As they bike along the intended trail, the tandem bikers were in perfect synchronisation, euphoria has washed over them and it was evident with the smiles on their faces. Despite being unable to take in the scenic views, the visually impaired was able to get the full experience of it with the sensory of hearing and being present in the moment.
The ride ended earlier than expected and beating the blazing sun, the sweat-drenched riders got to rejuvenate and refresh themselves. The overall experience was exhausting but fulfilling. As some quoted about the event “it is a simple idea but a meaningful one”.
To all parties who were involved in Ride for Sight 2023, a million thanks for spreading the kindness, contributing to a community-centred world, and most importantly, using our blessings to compliment the visually impaired imperfections!
